Re-envisioning God. - Letters From Instagram

I often receive beautiful letters from women the world who are within our Instagram community. I can never say enough just how much these letters touch me and truly reaffirm that feeling of being called to serve a certain community. I want to share this with you all and I hope that the parts of this message that you need resonate in your spirit.

With love,

“This might be the actual weirdest thing anyone has ever said to you. 😂 But I believe when we see God in people, we should share it. So here goes...

I broke up with the church a few years back, and it’s been really fucking hard. I hate so much of the bullshit that comes along with the institution, but I am so deeply connected to something bigger than me.

So I’ve been trying to pray again lately. I was listening to a podcast on learning how to pray again after a significant faith deconstruction, and they suggested coming up with a mental picture of God that works for you. Something that’s not an old, angry bearded white dude in the sky—which is what I grew up with.

The first image that came to mind was the photo you shared recently of yourself in the flowy white dress on the beach. And I sobbed at that visual in my mind.

God in the form of a queer black woman, God fully embodied as all the glorious things the church I grew up with couldn’t make space for. God as everything the white North American Protestant church can’t catch up to yet.

I just thought you should know—I see so much God in you. It’s so visible it’s wild. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with the world, especially when I know the sharing has been costly.” -Audra Hibbs
